As I was unloading the kiln last week, I placed the bracelet beads in a row on my table. I happened to put them in color groupings, and the end result looked like a rainbow (so I took a picture).
Rainbows remind me of spring - birds chirping, bright green grass, buds on the trees, thunderstorms that end in a rainbow... I began thinking how different stimuli can trigger memories or emotions. Aromas are one of those stimuli that can do the same. It has to do with the limbic system of our brains; the part of the brain that controls emotional responses, memory, and hormones. Here is a great resource for an overview of the limbic system and its functions.
Aromatherapy works because of how our limbic system works. An excerpt from Dr. Josh Axe's article, What Is the Limbic System? (Plus How to Keep It Healthy & the Role of Essential Oils) explains:
"Because essential oils can impact memory, balance hormone levels and overall support healthy limbic system functions, much new scientific evidence shows that inhaling essential oils may be one of the fastest ways to create physiological or psychological benefits. These include decreasing anxiety, anger or even fatigue."
I find this fascinating!
